Mehndi! Middle Eastern Tradition
We are making ART connections to Grade 1 International Studies of the Middle East! Students are learning about the custom of Mehndi henna painting. They are creating Mehndi art using traditional designs!

TAR BEACH
Students will be creating original art based on the book TAR BEACH, by artist and author FAITH RINGGOLD! They will learn about Ringgold, and will use the watercolor resist technique to create cityscapes, and create a surprise addition addition soaring over the scene!

CATCHING SNOWFLAKES
Students will learn about creating SKIN TONE to match their own, and how to capture other traits that make them unique in fun Winter self-portraits! Recognizing and creating PATTERNS of LINES and SHAPES will also be a focus of this mixed-media art unit!

PICASSO & THE ROOSTER!
Students are introduced to Picasso's use of Cubism, taking a close look at his painting "The Rooster". They will be using GEOMETRIC and ORGANIC SHAPES as well as LINES to create fun and colorful PICASSO-style Rooster pastel paintings!

LINES!
Students are spending some time on the first ELEMENT OF ART ~ LINE! They are identifying a variety of lines, pointing out lines in art, and creating a variety of lines in their own art! They are having a blast playing the Line Game with their teams, and will be applying their skills further in a study of artist, Alma Thomas!

The new school year is upon us! What an exciting time for our young DDES artists! This month, students will review Art Room procedures and expectations. They will also get their ARTful journey started with collaborative lessons that exercise their imaginations, as well as build their problem-solving and communication skills!

Animals & Their Habitats: Creating with Form & Collage Design
We are integrating classroom science studies with art skills! Students are learning to create GEOMETRIC 3D FORMS in modeling clay, and using these to create mini animal SCULPTURES! They will also be collaborating with classmates to create animal habitats with COLLAGE! These will be used by the students' classroom teachers to create stop-motion videos about their animal studies.

Mosaic Tile Art: Treasures of the Middle East
We are making ART connections to Grade 1 International Studies of the Middle East! We are exploring the MOSAIC tile art of the region and creating our own MOSAIC designs using collage techniques!

The Mouse Paint Experiment: Color Mixing!
We are studying how PRIMARY COLORS can be mixed to create SECONDARY COLORS by mixing our own colors with paint!
We are comparing our results from mixing RED, BLUE and YELLOW versus MAGENTA, CYAN and YELLOW and discussing our opinions on which work best to create ORANGE, GREEN and PURPLE. |
